Acquiring new works of art is about more than just curatorial expertise. It’s a collaborative effort that brings together the museum’s vision and the voices of the community we serve. At its heart, this process ensures our collection reflects our shared history and culture while staying true to the museum’s mission.

Every new piece in our collection starts with a question: What stories do we want to tell? Often, we seek works by African-American artists, pieces that resonate with our region’s history, or art that captures contemporary issues relevant to our community. This isn’t about filling walls. It’s about creating a collection that matters to you.

Finding these stories takes exploration. We visit galleries, exhibitions, and artists’ studios, and sometimes, artists or collectors come to us with work they believe belongs here. Each piece is carefully reviewed to ensure it aligns with our mission.

Funding is essential to bringing these works into the museum. While part of this comes from our budget, we rely heavily on grants, donations, and the support of the community. Donors play a critical role, whether through financial contributions or gifting artworks directly. Special fundraising campaigns are another way we raise the resources needed to grow the collection. Every time you attend an event or support a fundraiser, you’re shaping the future of the museum.

But we need more than funding. Your voice matters too. Tell us what you’d like to see represented. Join discussions, attend events, and let us know what resonates with you. By collaborating with community members, local artists, and organizations, we can ensure the collection reflects the unique stories and perspectives of the region. Advocacy for local talent and underrepresented themes truly makes a difference.

Even small actions have a big impact. Donations of any size help us acquire new works and care for the existing collection. Becoming a member is another meaningful way to stay connected and support our mission. Together, we can ensure the collection continues to honor the past while inspiring future generations.

Join us in shaping the Northeast Louisiana Delta African-American Heritage Museum’s collection. Whether through your ideas, your presence, or your generosity, you help ensure the museum remains a vibrant, meaningful part of our community.
